CONCEPT WATCHES 

The purpose is to challenge our engineers to showcase the Epoch Calendar in new Watch Mechanical Movements. whether it be digital or mechanical, quarts, automatic, solar or hand wound. Have skeleton, transparent watches or multi-axis tourbillon movement. Let's go through some of the concepts and great ways to tell epoch time, inspired by the chain itself. There are plenty of ways for people to create and express their creativity. So many partnerships with watch makers and web3 enthusiasts. So much engineering and art to create. You can see how fun this sort of competition can be with lots of room for companies around the world to prosper by making their own version and to tell their own story. 

A True 5 DAY WATCH

A big challenge for this project is to create a custom movement that tracks the 5 day cycle.

Creating a watch with one hand that only rotates once every 5 days is not a typical movement that you can find in most traditional movements. A way to resolve this issue without having to engineer an entirely new movement would to to use a movement that has a 5 day power reserve. All you would need to do is reset it every 5 days. so the epoch time is simply the means of telling time, and the power reserve of the watch is the time so we only need to measure the power reserve to measure the epoch. 

This would be a true Cardano Epoch watch.

Number of Epochs Per Year

How can we measure an Epoch measured in

  • 5 Days

  • 120 Hours

  • 7,200 Minutes

  • 432,000 Seconds

  • 360° Rotation Over 5 Days

Here there would only be 1 hand that tell the coundown or count up to the next epoch. So the hand travels around the dial once every 5 days

 

There is an epoch counter to tell us what epoch we are currently in, it will increase by one digit every 5 days 

 

 No local time for this simple hand wound or automatic movement. 

A 5 day power reserve could potentially create the necessary epoch measurement where the power reserve actually measure the 5, a 5 day power reserve measure would measure the epoch and a reset. winding the watch would need to be done at the turn of each epoch, a reminder to touch grass, recognize the turn of the epoch. getting ADA rewards and to connect with the community. vote in governance. check your portfolio.

CARDANO LOGO AND TIME

24 Time Zone 

Is it a coincidence the at the Cardano logo has 24 outer circles? This fits nicely to show a total world clock each of the circles represents a different timezone. 

This can be an awesome way to show the Cardano logo, using official global consensus time in a world stage public place. a town square, transportation center or university. or to sponsor a sporting event as an official. time keeper. 

 

The world certainly doesn't set on Cardano. That is a prestigious goal and carries so much meaning in a final product for all to see and learn from. These time pieces and clocks will also incorporate a sun and moon, the tides and epoch information. where will the sun be when the next epoch hits, perhaps this clock will let us know

These are unique and fun challenges specific to Cardano. It will be fun to create and engineer in the watch movements that have never been explored in horology.  

Here the Cardano logo is used to tell local time with the hours and minutes included in the 2 outer smaller circles of the logo

The inner circles are for 5 epoch days,

After the 5th day the smaller inner hand would skip over the current epoch counter, the epoch counter would increase by 1, then the hand would  land at the inner 1 spot, and starts the next epoch cycle. 

 

of course the inner circles do not have to include any number, 

NATURAL STONES AND MOTHER OF PEARL

None of these dials will be identical to the next, so there will be room for rarity within a collection of these natural looking works of art and opprtunity to appreciate the unique finer details. 

the NFT for these types of watches can include RWA history of where the stone and pearl comes from. 

Here we combined two classic luxury watch materials. Blue Lapis and Mother of Pearl. Classic, Natural and really looks good side by side. We have to mention Ada Lovelace would approve with this look. 

This is certainly not as flashy as some of the other watches out there but will carry itself through the generations of epochs with class and appeal.  it looks content and strong and at home in time. 

CHRONOGRAPHS

Chronographs within the circles gives an opportunity to show the epoch calendar, local time, date, day, month,  a countdown to the next epoch in 5 days as well as hours of each day.

am or pm. the date of the next epoch, the day of the next epoch. The list goes on. 

24-hour clocks

A 24 hour clock should be able to have an adjustable moon or sun to go around the bezel, and it can be placed next to the time of the new epoch depending on what time zone the epoch is due to strike,  ie eastern time epoch is around 5pm. the epoch moon would be placed near that 5pm time on the 24 clock as a mark for the timezone you are in when the epoch strikes.

FRAGMENTATION IN MOTION

Using the ADA symbol to tell the epoch cycle. The A will break apart throughout the 5 days and reassemble back to form on by the turn of the epoch. 

ILLUMINATING THE NEXT EPOCH

A llight or colored circle can spinning every 5 days within the Cardano logo

Have the lights light up as the epoch develops,  or when blocks  get minted for your stake pool

 

The lights can potential circle like a moving clock, or 

put in the time within the circles

 

We can set it up so that the circles progressively intensify in color, or fading into the new epoch, or getting brighter into the next epoch. 

Perhaps only the 2 lights up to show how many days are left until the next epoch. 

Or  each part of the Cardano logo dial would light up when a block is minted. 

TRANSPARENCY AND TOURBILLONS

It is important for us to imbed the principles of the chain into the watches. Transparency will play a common theme for permissionless  blockchain and opensource philosophy. So many of the watches will feature a transparent look, to show the inner working of the engine behind the face. to appreciate the input and output. Yes, this style can sometimes be referred to as a skeleton so we are all too familiar with a ghost tale. Add a multiple escapement functions to help balance the input and output of the watch movement and showcase a tourbillion in the dial of the logo itself. 

IMBEDDED NANO FONT AND QR CODES

Adding nano tech font, including an entire whitepaper, or even a private key in a microscopic print that can only be see with a special microscope.

DIGITAL EPOCH  WATCHES

Digital watches are inevitable. Ones dedicated to the Cardano ecosystem can be powerful tools. Likely built from the ground up because... well, thats what the community tends to do.

We truly love the retro cypherpunk look and cant wait to build these out and inspire others to do the same.

Count the next block or visualize the epoch calendar through lights and alerts. Dabble into to zk proofing and geolocation. Vote on-chain through the watch. make the watch a wallet.

MOVING PARTS, ALARMS AND TUNES

LEFT: Here the 5 eras are in a row. Similar to that of a power reserve for many watch movements. or similar to that of a fuel gauge or speedometer for an engine. 

A 5 day power reserve could potentially create the necessary epoch measurement. 

 

Many of these style watches have functional moving parts, like the hands might shake together or a coin would drop into a bucket, perhaps a block gets minted on an anzil, or stake pool operators receive an umbrella in their pineapple drink by the pool.

 

These types of watches many times also have an alarm with a tune of bells to go off at a certain time, in this case, the turn of the epoch or if a block is minted. 

ABOVE:
Epoch is measure in a blooming flower. Every 5 days the flowers will slowly bloom, adding 1 pedal each day of the 5 day cycle.
Or one flower can bloom each day until all 5 are bloomed. 

Here is another example of a visual display of motion. On the LEFT the Ouroboros serpent will spin around the dial every 5 days.

 

RIGHT: 5 hydra heads will open their mouth to help tell epoch time.  One of the dragon's mouth will open each day for 5 days. the 5th day is of course the epoch. (yes there are only supposed to be 5)
